Timeless Home Interior Design Trends

Old World style with gold heavily glazed walls, travertine tile, and granite overload… I can't tell you how many homes we are redoing to get rid of this trend from the past, but this style was considered the height of fashion in interior design in the early part of this century. Almost all our clients wanted the look. Design trends will always come and go and sometimes that’s a good thing.  There are plenty of cringe-worthy trends I’m glad are gone. Remember round beds, avocado green shag, furry toilet seat covers, and upholstered walls - all thankfully gone. Even the best designs will tire in 10 years or so. Very few can truly withstand the test of time, however, there are a couple that I can think of that do and will. That’s why they make it into this classics list. If you’re currently thinking about remodeling or renovating, try to integrate some of these timeless design elements into your interior to help you get that “classic timeless” look.

Neutral Walls

  Painting the walls in the number one way to transform the overall look and feel of a room. But painting that room to try to look like the one you fell in love with on Pinterest might not be the smart move. If it's super bold and trendy chances are you'll end up hating it sooner rather than later. Consider playing it safe. Neutral walls have always had a strong presence in traditional home decor and are confidently making their mark in the new era of interior design. Time-tested neutrals such as shades of white, beige, and grey are a safe bet to make your walls unaffected by the passage of time or changes in interior fashions. And the timing for white walls couldn't be better, they are totally on-trend.If you want to opt for a more daring look, choose a neutral color pallet and inject bold fabrics, art, textures and furniture designs. These will add expressive design elements that will give the room personality and the neutral wall colors will help to keep the look classic.

Add Millwork

  Frequently interiors are devoid of architectural interest. Imagine four white walls of drywall. Now imagine adding some interesting wood panels to those walls and crown moldings. Suddenly the room becomes much more interesting. These details can make a huge difference by adding loads of character and a layer of richness. Millwork refers to crown molding, baseboard trim, chair rails, wood paneling, fireplace mantels, and door casings. Whether painted or stained, well-designed millwork will be loved for decades and that’s why it makes the interior design elements  “classics list.”

White Bedding

  Nothing says luxury and timelessness more in bedroom interiors than white bedding. It’s no coincidence that the majority of 5-star hotels use this color when it comes to their bedding designs. White bedding injects a vibe of freshness and purity. It also merges perfectly with any style of interior design, from traditional to uber contemporary. Moreover, white bedding gives the freedom to choose from a multitude of coordinating fabrics, wallpapers, rugs, and accessories with very little restriction.  In fact, you might be hard-pressed to find a pillow or throw that didn’t look good. Investing in fine white bedding is a sure bet that can stand the test of time as it enables you to make changes in your bedroom with minimal effort.

Custom Design Elements

  No matter the decade, a well-designed custom piece of furniture can be a forever thing. Heirloom pieces you’ll never want to part with. I'm a big fan of having custom pieces made for our clients, especially when they serve a special purpose or function.  We’ve commissioned several dining tables over the years so that we could have the exact size and look we needed. We’ve also done nightstands with secret hiding places, sideboards, media cabinets, and dressers. Another benefit of custom is being able to have them finished to coordinate with the existing furniture you already own. Having a piece made just for your home is a great way to tell the story of who you are and how you want to live. Be thoughtful about the design and don’t go for fad finishes. If done correctly, you’ll end up with a classic timeless piece. It’s not easy to create a timeless design, so before committing to a new home design or remodel project, do your research, save pictures of things and rooms you love, set your priorities and definitely work with a professional designer to make the best of the process. You’ll be so glad you did.
