Take a Shower and Make the BedThis may sound an odd bit of advice for working from home, but the idea is to try to maintain as much of your pre-quarantine routine as possible. Wake up at the same time, get dressed for work and make your bed, even if making the bed wasn’t part of your prior routine. You don’t need the distraction of a messed up bed and you’ll be less likely to crawl back in it if it’s already made.Set Yourself up for SuccessIf you don’t have the luxury of a home office, find a dedicated work from home spot. Whether you have room for a desk or are working from the dining table, gather your supplies. Everything you kept at your desk in your office you should have at the ready in your new designated workspace at home. Stay organized. Consider purchasing stackable trays, a pen and pencil holder and rolling storage bins. These items will be especially helpful if your workspace is the dining table and you need to tuck your work away at the end of the day. Remember, your co-workers and clients can see your environment in the background when your video conferencing, so make it organized. Make it PrettyJust because it’s temporary doesn’t mean you can’t make it pretty. If you hate the way your designated work space looks, it will be a distraction. Make an effort to spruce it up. Studies show personalized work spaces increase productivity. If your budget allows, buy yourself a desk and a comfortable office chair. Your body will thank you.Plan Your Work and Work Your PlanMaintaining a structure much like it was at your office will help you maintain focus. Set regular work hours, including starting and stopping times. Don’t let work creep into your personal time and personal time creep into your work. Make sure to schedule breaks and your lunch hour. Set guidelines and boundaries with others in your home. It may take some time to iron out all the details, but once you have some ground rules it’ll make working from home easier for everyone living with you.Don’t be a LonerIn order to avoid feeling isolated, set aside time during your breaks and lunch hour to Facetime or Zoom with your co-workers or go for a walk outdoors. This will help you feel more connected.
